Previewing the Portland-Alberta Beer Scrabble Thing (PABST)
Ah, yes. Portland. The land of beer, coffee, hipsters, bikes, and city parks.
Nestled amongst breweries and majestic trees, the PABST will take place in a stylish century-old bungalow. Short for the Portland-Alberta Beer Scrabble Thing, the PABST offers a weekend of games in one of the USA's hippest neighborhoods, the Alberta Arts District.
Alberta, for short, is home to three former national Scrabble champions, putting it on the map with Bangkok and Lagos as one the best cities to play the world's favorite word game.
It's no wonder Fred Armisen mentioned on that show he was on:
"Portland is the city where young people go to play Scrabble."
Throughout the weekend, competitors will aim to defeat the legend known only as drbing, and likely, come up short. But it's no matter - at the end of each day, competitors will celebrate over some of the country's best food and libations, and of course, anagrams.
Nab one of the remaining couple of places in the event, or follow along this coming weekend as tournament Scrabble returns to PDX.
