Announcing 3 new CoCo tournaments

Since the CoCo’s launch only two months ago, more than 60 people have signed up to play or direct CoCo tournaments. Our six initial tournaments have been filling fast, and we’ve adapted to meet that high demand by expanding the capacity at all of our upcoming events. But we’re not stopping there. Today, we’re announcing the addition of three new tournaments to the 2020 calendar. These tournaments will bring the CoCo to new regions of the continent. We hope you have the chance to play in a CoCo event near you this year - and if there is a new city where you would like us to direct the next tournament, let us know!

As we expand our tournament offerings, we’re proud to offer a growing diversity of events with distinct styles, venues, directors, and geographic locations. I extend a heart full of gratitude to the directors and tournament organizers who have stepped up to bring you these opportunities for fun and games. To Jesse, Kate, Kurt, Scott, Randi, and Conrad - thanks for sharing your love of Scrabble with the community and making it possible for us to come together and play. To our other new directors in the pipeline looking to direct in new places, we can’t wait to see the tournaments you pull together and look forward to announcing them in the months to come.

Here’s a rundown of our three newest tournaments:

Evans and I will return to his hometown of Charlottesville to direct this two-day tournament with 14 games on July 11-12. You’ve requested larger venues, and we’re delivering: This tournament will take place at The Southern Crescent, a local Cajun restaurant with two stories and a big outdoor patio. It has bright and airy space to accommodate a large field of players. Home to the critically acclaimed Bodo’s Bagels and the best pizza I’ve ever had, Charlottesville is a charming town that’s accessible to a wide range of East Coast players. It’s a short drive from my former home in Washington, D.C., and I look forward to playing once more with my former club members from the mid-Atlantic region.

Kelowna2.jpg

Jesse Matthews will direct the CoCo’s first Canadian tournament in the beautiful Okanagan Valley of British Columbia on July 25-26. The Kelowna tournament will take place in Jesse’s residence and feature 11 games. Kelowna is built on a massive lake and surrounded by mountains. The town boasts a variety of local wineries and breweries, hiking trails, golfing, and other outdoor options. It’s all you could want for relaxation and recreation - paired with some fun rounds of Scrabble, too.

For those of you seeking a more vibrant urban experience, Kurt Davies and Kate Fukawa-Connelly have teamed up to bring you to the heart of New York City for the CoCo’s first Northeast tournament. The inaugural Big Apple Collins Open, NYU (BACON) will take place on November 14 and feature seven games. The venue is New York University’s Leadership Institute, located two blocks away from iconic Washington Square Park. Kurt and Kate promise that the BACON will be a sizzling good time - even for those of us who don’t eat bacon.

Jennifer Clinchy

Jennifer Clinchy was elected as the inaugural Executive Director for the Collins Coalition. She is an active Scrabble tournament director and player.
