Commemorating two years of CoCo Club

Back in January 2021, when we couldn’t meet in person and were eager to provide a place for virtual Scrabble play for our community, we launched the CoCo Club on Woogles. And it was a great success. We ran 123 consecutive club sessions, never missing a single week.

Over the past two years, a team of directors provided a reliable place for fun games every week: Rod Weis, Becky Dyer, David Whitley, Geoff Thevenot, Peter Armstrong, and me. CoCo Club would not have existed without these people, and we are so grateful to them for devoting their evenings to run club for all the players who turned out.

And many players did turn out! About 110 different players from around the world played club, completing more than 4,400 games. Two players scored over 700: David Whitley with a 729-347 win against Rod Weis, and Evans Clinchy with a 709-356 against Steve Ozorio.

In the most recent quarter, ending on December 31, 2022, the club champions were:

#1 - Austin Shin, 48.5-16.5

#2 - Suresh Chinnaiyah, 42.5-20.5

#3 - Mohammad Sulaiman, 33-22

Austin was a double winner, having played 65 games and earning the CoCo Cup, which we award to the player who played the most games. Suresh played the second most club games last quarter, with 63 games. Bharath Balakrishnan was a runner-up with 56 games played.

Ten different people finished in the top three in one or more quarters to become CoCo Club Champions. Several players were repeat champions, including Sammy Okosagah, Mohammad Sulaiman, and Anand Bharadwaj. Austin deserves special recognition for finishing in the top two every quarter since he started playing club in Spring 2021. Thanks to Austin for streaming club each week at twitch.tv/austinho9

With that, we have an announcement: With two years behind us, and recognizing that more people have played an in-person CoCo event than have played in club, we’re taking a break from running club to let our directors focus on in-person tournaments. We may be back one day - if you or someone you know is interested in directing club, please get in touch. Players are welcome to continue gathering in the club room on Woogles every Tuesday to match each other on their own.

In the meantime, we have some exciting new tournament announcements coming very soon, so stay tuned. We hope to see you over the board this year!
