Recapping the second Providence, RI 1-day CoCo tournament

If there's one thing we just absolutely love to see with CoCo events, it's steady growth. Getting an event off the ground, showing that proof of concept, and building up up up from there - there's pretty much nothing more gratifying.

And so far, the crew in Providence, RI is doing the thing. Niel Gan and company started holding 1-day CoCo events a month ago. Last time, in early March, they drew 4 players; this weekend, they had 6. That's progress. They're building something.

This past Saturday, the gang met up at Buttonwoods Brewery for 6 games starting at high noon. Here's Niel with a recap of all that went down:

Providence played host to a six-game tournament this weekend at a bustling local brewery. Six Scrabblers joined us for a day of tasty eats and tastier plays.

The competition was fierce, with Matthew O'Connor sweating his way to first place after battling Chloe Fatsis in two tough games. Matt Zeleznik took second.

One highlight came from newcomer Amy Kasprzycki, who discovered our tournament online while searching for things to do in Providence. She impressed with her play of I(N)QUIRED for 108 points against Kyle Fellahi. We can't wait to see her back for future events!

We were glad to have Chloe for her second-ever Collins tournament. She also conducted interviews with the group for a piece she's writing for one of her classes - we'd love to see it when it's done.

The highest-scoring play was Kyle's triple-triple of ANElA(C)ES, a word he picked up while studying eight-letter words on the bus ride from Montreal. Some nines also hit the board, including Kyle's MACAR(ON)Is and Richard Buck's (PO)LONAISE.

Thanks again to everyone who joined!

Props to everyone in Providence on another successful 1-day tournament. Thanks to Niel for directing, and congratulations to both of the Matt(hew)s on their strong performances. Until next time...
