OVERVIEW

Word Cup is an annual Scrabble championship run by the Word Game Players' Organization (WGPO). This year, the CoCo is teaming up with WGPO to run the Collins divisions in Chicagoland on July 9-13, 2022.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from The Carter Chapman Shreve Family Foundation, the top prize for the Collins Division will be $10,000 USD.

There will be extensive live coverage of Word Cup, including a live broadcast of all 31 rounds, aired on the official Scrabble Twitch channel. Thanks to our sponsors from Scopely - the makers of Scrabble GO and PlayScrabble.com - for making this possible.

TOURNAMENT DETAILS

• Number of games: 31

• WESPA rated: This tournament was officially rated by the World English Language Scrabble Players Association (WESPA).

• Player capacity: 250 players across all divisions. We expect this tournament to fill quickly, so sign up early! The directors may raise the cap later depending on demand and room accommodations.

• Parameters: WESPA rules, CSW21 lexicon, 5 points per word challenged

• Prizes: Generous place and performance prizes will be awarded for all Collins divisions.

• Divisions: This tournament will feature two divisions. Division 2 is open to players with a rating below 1600. Division 1 is open to all players, with unlimited play-ups allowed. You can see the current entrants for each division here.

REGISTRATION

• Deadline: Registration closed on July 1.

• Main Event entry fee: Beginning April 1, the entry fee is $155. CoCo Premium Members can claim a $15 discount off the entry fee, same as for every CoCo tournament. You can learn about becoming a CoCo Premium Member here.

• Main Event youth entry fee: $60

• Early Bird entry fee: Beginning April 1, the entry fee is $35. Registration for the Early Bird closes on July 1.

• Early Bird youth entry fee: $10

• Refunds: A $5 processing fee will apply to refunds of entry fees to cover financial transaction fees.

• Newcomer Discounts Program: If this will be your very first Scrabble tournament or your first rated Collins tournament, check out the CoCo’s Newcomer Discounts program to claim 100% or 50% off your entry fee!

SCHEDULE & LOGISTICS

• Main Event: 31 games from Saturday, July 9 through Wednesday, July 13, 2022. Players will play seven games each day, plus three games on the final day of the tournament. Games on Wednesday may begin as early as 9:30 a.m. Central, and the directors tentatively expect the tournament and awards to wrap up around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13. • Early Bird: 6 games on Friday, July 8, starting at 10:30 a.m. Central. You can learn more about the Early Bird here.

• Public Health and Safety Policy: Players must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and have received all booster shot(s) for which they are eligible. Masks are required for this event and must be surgical masks or better (KN-95, N-95, etc.). For more information, see the Word Cup COVID policy.

• Venue Location: DoubleTree by Hilton Lisle Naperville, 3003 Corporate West Dr., Lisle, IL 60532. The venue is a short drive from both the O'Hare and Midway international airports.

• Venue Hotel: We have a limited number of rooms left in our room block at the venue hotel for a discounted rate. The rate varies depending on the number of people staying in the room. The rate includes free breakfast. You can access the discounted block rate by booking online here. There is no commuter fee for players with other accommodations. • Nearby Hotel: Additional rooms at a discounted rate are available at the Sheraton Lisle hotel located across the street from the venue. To book these rooms, click here or call (630) 505-1000 and mention “Word Game Players Organization” to receive the group discount. You can also try booking a room with the hotel through Expedia or other travel websites.

• Hotel Update 4/2/2022: We have added several rooms to the hotel block at the venue hotel and at a nearby hotel. See above for new links to book a room. These rooms will go fast; we recommend booking your accommodations as soon as you can.

• Reception Update 6/20/2022: Due to concerns about potential COVID spread at the reception, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Saturday evening reception.
